Work

Oxford Neurosurgery is a fantastic place to work and learn neurosurgery. We are a friendly forward thinking department led by seventeen consultants with the full range of neurosurgical sub-specialties.

Oxford Neurosurgery is the tertiary neurosurgery service for the Thames Valley region. We provide elective and emergency care for adults and children in a busy neurosurgical centre covering a three million patient population.

Teaching

Train

Oxford Neurosurgery is the only neurosurgery unit in Health Education Thames Valley. Trainees have the huge benefit of stability, and train in one hospital for eight years.

We recruit run-through neurosurgical trainees (NTNs) through the national selection board for neurosurgery.

We also recruit and train academic trainees

Training second year foundation doctors (FY2s) is a vital part of what we do, with five foundation doctors in the department at anyone time.

Junior Clinical Fellowships (JCFs) are post-foundation SHO roles. This is a non-training role, but we will train you. Typically we recruit doctors who have previously been unsuccessful at national selection and are looking for experience before applying again. Our JCFs are expected to be successful at their next national selection board, and frequently are.

Teaching on the GIN course

Learn

Our education program includes grand rounds, seminars, tutorials, anatomy teaching, and impromptu teaching sessions on the ward.

We are extremely proud of our Getting Into Neurosurgery (GIN) course, which runs yearly from August until interviews in late January. In recent years up to 20% of successful candidates at national selection have been through GIN.

Improve

Quality improvement, audit, and research are important to us and we will help guide you through the process. Our staff include many top trainees from national selection. We have the experience to help you build the CV you need to attain your goals.

Have Fun

Neurosurgery is hard work but fun. Our consultants are friendly, our trainees supportive, and our junior doctors form what is without doubt one of the best medical teams in the world.

Oxford is a great city to live in, with lots to see and do.

We are a family friendly department. Many of the trainees have children and successful work-life balances. We support less than full time training at Oxford Neurosurgery.
