Oxford School of Neurosurgery
Oxford Neurosurgery runs a comprehensive post graduate teaching program with classes aimed at all levels of training. Classes include our innovative Getting Into Neurosurgery (GIN) course, anatomy away days, and advanced consultant led monthly teaching and grand-rounds. At Oxford Neurosurgery we are proud to teach the next generation of neurosurgeons.
TITANS
Aims: The fundementals of safe ward based neurosurgical care.
When: 3 times a year, the first Wednesday of August, December, and April.
Where: TBC.
Students: Mandatory all new SHO starters.
Anatomy Day
Three times a year we handover early to the on-call team, and make our way into town to the Medical Sciences Teaching Centre for an afternoon of anatomy teaching with prosections.
This is a popular day with a focus on clinical anatomy. An evening out in Oxford is always organised afterwards.

Getting Into Neurosurgery (GIN)
GIN started in 2018 and has been very successful. Due to the high demand for places and the seminar style of teaching, we can only give places to doctors who have worked for us.
The format currently is fortnightly lectures starting from August, followed by 2 weeks of intense on-line coaching prior to the interviews.
Foundation program teaching
The Post Graduate center run a teaching program for the foundation doctors which our department fully supports. As an FY2 you must make time for this and we insist that it is bleep free and uninterrupted. These sessions are run by Health Education Thames Valley.
Aims: As per the
When: at 1400 on the second Monday of the month and the last Wednesday of the month.
Where: GPEC.
Students: FY2s on duty.
Teachers: As per foundation program.
Bleeps: Leave in SHO office (except on-call).
Junior mentoring
Each new neurosurgery junior (FY2 / JCF / ST1) is assigned a mentor for their first four months of neurosurgery.
This is in addition to the consultant led clinical/ educator supervision system.
Mentors are registrars who have been approved by the department.
Aims:
Provide career guidance.
Provide pastoral support.
Help complete workplace based assessments.
The suggested framework for these sessions is fortnightly meetings, off the ward, bleep free, lasting around 30 minutes, preferably in a relaxed setting involving coffee or tea.
When: 30 minutes every 3 weeks to be agreed between pairs.
Where: Anywhere with coffee / tea.
Who: All new FY2s, JCFs, and ST1s for first 4 months.
Bleeps: Leave in SHO office (except on-call).
Grand Round and consultant led teaching
Monthly mandatory teaching for the whole unit, integrated with the neuroscience grand round.
When: 1st Friday of the month.
Where: Grand Round in main lecture theatre (near Women's Centre) 1030 - 1130. Consultant led teaching is usually in HC room (1130 - 1300).
Students: All junior doctors on duty are mandated to attend please.
Teachers: NTNs and consultants.
Bleeps: Leave in SHO office (except on-call).
Audit days
A morning of audit and QIP presentations once every few months.
When: Every few months.
Who: everyone on duty in the department.
Bleeps: Leave in SHO office (except on-call).
